Statement by the Secretary General During the Civil Society Stakeholder Consultations for The GBV Model Law –24th August 2021

It is with a deep sense of appreciation that I welcome you all to what is to us a critically important consultative meeting with civil society on the Draft SADC Model Law on Gender Based Violence. Let me preface my remarks with an illustrative quotation from the 44th President of the United States, Mr. Barack Obama, who said, “Civil society is the conscience of our countries. It is the catalyst of change. It is why strong nations do not fear active citizens. Strong nations embrace, support and empower active citizens.” In line with this observation by Mr. Obama, the SADC Parliamentary Forum recognizes the indispensable role that civil society plays as the voice of the people and, in that respect, as an important bridge between governments and the people, including those in the hinterland.
