Dear Colleagues/partners,

Boemo SEKGOMA (Ms) SECRETARY GENERAL
Boemo SEKGOMA (Ms) SECRETARY GENERAL

It is with immense pleasure that I release this statement to the Forum’s Member Parliaments and partners in view of celebrating momentous events which are closely intertwined, notably the 16 days window to commemorate productive and dynamic activism to end gender-based violence, which effectively starts on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on the 25th November and ends on Human Rights Day on 10th December 2022.

The Forum is fully cognisant of the paramount significance of the 16 days of activism and fervently encourages Member Parliaments and partners to intensely pursue legislative and oversight GBV initiatives to protect women and young girls not only in this time bracket but all year-round. The SADC-PF moreover wishes to express its unreserved solidarity with the global theme of 2022 which is “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls”, and calls Parliaments and MPs of the SADC region to join the noble cause of ending GBV and to also address the key structural determinants of GBV which are deeply rooted in societal norms and practices. In particular, the Forum recalls the need to domesticate the newly adopted SADC Model Law on Gender-Based Violence which sets out the protective norms and standards to achieve a comprehensive normative legal framework that aims to protect women from GBV at home, at work, in society or even in the cyberspace.

In line with the commemoration of Human Rights Day, the Forum reiterates that violence against women and girls in all its forms and facets constitute a serious human rights violation, and there is furthermore a need to eliminate discrimination based on gender, sex or sexual orientation, in view of ensuring that women are treated equally and at par with men in all spheres of life.

Accordingly, the Forum wishes its Member Parliaments and partners a prolific 16-day period and to capitalise on the international momentum to end GBV to mark progressive and firm steps in that direction at domestic level.

Yours faithfully,

Boemo SEKGOMA (Ms)

SECRETARY GENERAL
