The Secretary General of the SADC Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF), Ms Boemo Sekgoma, has stressed the need for a comprehensive, multi-sectoral response to child marriage.

She has argued that the practice is deeply intertwined with sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), education, economic inclusion, and climate justice.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the Women Deliver 2026 Conference in Melbourne, Australia last week, Ms Sekgoma highlighted the continued regional impact of the SADC Model Law on Eradicating Child Marriage and Protecting Children Already in Marriage, describing it as a powerful legislative and advocacy instrument shaping reforms across Southern Africa.

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA – Parliamentarians from across Southern Africa will convene for a high-level virtual capacity development session on 24 March 2026 aimed at strengthening parliamentary oversight of public debt management amid mounting fiscal pressures across the continent.

The engagement, organised jointly by the SADC Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF) and the African Forum and Network on Debt and Development (AFRODAD), forms part of Phase III of an ongoing initiative to equip legislators with the tools needed to navigate the complex dynamics of sovereign debt, climate financing, and public financial management reforms.

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA – The SADC Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF) will convene a statutory meeting of its Standing Committee on Human and Social Development and Special Programmes (HSDSP) in Gaborone, Botswana, from 27 to 29 March 2026.

The meeting will bring together over 30 Members of Parliament from 15 Member States to deliberate on the implementation of two key regional instruments: the SADC Protocol on Education and Training (1997) and the SADC Protocol on Employment and Labour (2023).

Speaking ahead of the meeting, SADC PF Secretary General Ms Boemo Sekgoma noted that discussions will be held under the theme:
“Leveraging SADC Protocols on Education and Employment to Build Resilient and Inclusive Human Capital for the Future.”

1. Introdução e enquadramento da tarefa

O Fórum Parlamentar da SADC é uma organização interparlamentar de referência com 15 parlamentos membros. Estabelecido ao abrigo do n.º 2 do artigo 9.º do Tratado da SADC, o Fórum funciona como um órgão independente da Comunidade de Desenvolvimento da África Austral revestido do mandato de promover a democracia, o parlamentarismo e o diálogo regional sobre questões de interesse mútuo. O Fórum implementa iniciativas e programas que visam promover os direitos humanos e os princípios democráticos, incluindo a busca pela cobertura universal dos cuidados de saúde (CUS) no âmbito do Projecto de Governação em matéria de Saúde e Direitos Sexuais e Reprodutivos, VIH e SIDA, financiado pela Suécia (2023-2026).

Parliamentary Clerks strengthen financial oversight skills at SoCATT professional development seminar

Gaborone, Botswana - Parliamentary clerks and financial oversight experts from across Africa convened in Botswana for the 9th Professional Development Seminar of the Society of Clerks-at-the-Table (SoCATT) Africa Region, where participants explored ways to strengthen parliamentary scrutiny of public finances and reinforce accountability in governance.

Held from 9 to 13 March 2026, the five-day seminar brought together parliamentary administrators, budget analysts and public finance specialists under the theme, “Parliaments and Public Finance Management: Fostering Transparency and Accountability.”

The event was organised under the framework of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region and its professional body, SoCATT Africa, and hosted by the National Assembly of Botswana.

Throughout the seminar, delegates examined the evolving role of parliaments in overseeing national budgets, ensuring fiscal discipline and strengthening institutional frameworks that safeguard the prudent management of public resources.

Zambia launches Institute for Parliamentary Studies and Training as leaders hail transformative milestone
